Separate but equal. Fifty years ago, America decided that wasn’t acceptable. To be sure, the journey has not been easy. We’re still trying to figure out how to live together in ways that make us all better.
Sadly, the Church has not significantly contributed to the solution. Every Sunday, we still look very much separate but equal. And that’s a tragedy, because in Jesus Christ, we have what the world is looking for: “For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:14). He has blazed the trail for us to be Separate No More.
So why aren’t we living it? Quite frankly, because separate but equal is easier. We have different music, different styles, different stories, and different experiences. And it’s easier to relate to people who share those things in common. But what if we chose to take the more challenging road of exploring ways of listening to each other, learning from each other, and loving each other in real and practical ways?
Not only would the Church be richer, but the world would see a living witness to the transforming power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are calling the people of God to Converge – to come together – around the promises of Ephesians 2:14, and work toward having a Church that is Separate No More.
